Showrunner Lauren Hissrich promises that Geralt, played by Henry Cavill, would receive a “heroic sendoff” in The Witcher season 3. The British actor’s portrayal as Geralt of Rivia, a magically improved monster hunter and the series’ title witcher, for two seasons of Netflix’s fantasy series, has received a great deal of praise from critics and viewers. Cavill confirmed his departure from The Witcher after season 3 in late October, and Liam Hemsworth would take over for season 4.

Hissrich vowed the most epic sendoff for Cavill’s Geralt in The Witcher season 3, which adapts the fourth book in Andrzej Sapkowski’s trilogy, Time of Contempt, in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. The Witcher showrunner talked about how important Cavill has been to the series and how, despite not being the original plan, season 3 will give him a hero’s send-off.

Hissrich said, “Henry has given so much to the show and so we want to honor that appropriately. What is so interesting is that season 3, to me, is the closest thing that we’ve done as a one-to-one adaptation of the books. Obviously, we can’t do every page, but Time of Contempt gave us so many big action events, plot points, defining character moments, huge reveals of a big bad. There’s so much to do that we were able to stick really, really closely with the books. Geralt’s big turn is about giving up neutrality and doing anything that he has to do to get to Ciri. And to me, it’s the most heroic sendoff that we could have, even though it wasn’t written to be that. Geralt has a new mission in mind when we come back to him in season 4. He’s a slightly different Geralt than we expected. Now, by the way, that’s an understatement.”

Given his physical attributes and passion for The Witcher video games, Cavill has long been seen as the ideal actor to portray Geralt. Cavill’s performance in the Netflix adaptation’s two seasons has only grown in popularity because of his unflappable demeanour and dedication to realistic stuntwork. He even sustained an injury while filming season 2. The Witcher does undoubtedly deserve its lead hero a decent sendoff because Cavill is one of the key reasons Netflix’s fantasy adaption has been such a huge sensation.

Given that The Witcher season 3 was written and finished filming before Cavill announced his departure, the Netflix series is in a difficult situation. Hissrich claims that Cavill’s Geralt will still have a valiant send-off in The Witcher season 3 despite the coincidence. The Witcher showrunner claims that Geralt “throwing up his neutrality” and “doing whatever” to bring Ciri back home will achieve this. In the books, Ciri is taken away from her guardians after Yennefer’s attempts to teach her magic fail.
