The character of Mutt Williams, the juvenile greaser who, it was finally discovered, was the son of Indiana Jones, is one of the most divisive aspects of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Shia LaBoeuf, who portrayed Mutt Williams, has not yet been included in the cast announcement for the next sequel, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

It’s safe to assume that LaBoeuf himself didn’t think much of the role either; the actor claimed in 2010 that “I believe I failed to do justice to the heritage that the public adored and valued. You may blame Steven Spielberg and the writer if you resort to monkey-swinging and other inappropriate behavior (the director of that film). But it’s up to the actor to bring it to life and make it work, and I couldn’t. Thus, I am at fault. Simple.”

However, the upcoming movie, which is set in 1969, more than a decade after the previous entry in the franchise, has recently stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that spectators will “find out what happened” to the character of Mutt. Without going into great detail, the filmmaker also hinted at what the titular dial was.

In previous movies, Indy has been on the hunt for objects like the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant, about which legends and myths have been passed down for centuries and which, in order for the legends to exist in the first place, must have some form of historical basis. This demonstrates that Mangold is fully aware of what makes Indiana Jones unique and that the character himself is honest about what he requires.

On June 30, 2023, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny premieres in cinemas. View the trailer in the section below.
