The Addams Family offshoot The Addams Family was created by the now-owned Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) Studios, which means a rival streaming service contributed to the success of the successful Netflix series Wednesday.

According to Deadline, Amazon completed an agreement to buy MGM Studios for $8.45 billion back in March 2022. This gives the sizable Jeff Bezos-owned corporation control over the entire production schedule of MGM, including shows created for a number of Prime Video competitors including Netflix and Hulu. Notably, this implies that Amazon shares some blame for their greatest rival’s most recent success tale, Wednesday on Netflix, which MGM Television produced. And in only a few weeks, Wednesday rose to the top of Netflix’s English-language program chart.

Wednesday has consistently broken Netflix audience records ever since the show’s Nov. 23 premiere. After Stranger Things Season 4, it is currently the second most viewed show on the streaming giant, surpassing previous top performers like Bridgerton and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Over one billion hours of the show have been seen by Netflix members altogether, which equates to roughly 150 million homes. While Wednesday fell short of Stranger Things’ 1.35 billion total hours seen, it did outperform the well-liked horror program in its first week, accumulating 341 million hours as opposed to the fourth season’s 335 million hours.

A Look into Wednesday Addams’ Life and Times

The program, which features Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, centers on her exploits at Nevermore Academy, the gothic high school where her parents, Gomez and Morticia (played by Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones, respectively), first met. The dismal youngster becomes involved in a murder investigation and several supernatural pranks but finds it difficult to connect with her hideous classmates due to her deadpan misanthropy. The actress Christina Ricci, who portrayed Wednesday in the Addams Family movies from the 1990s, is a lecturer at Nevermore Academy. Tim Burton, a well-known gothic director, also helmed half of the season.

Although a second season of Wednesday has not yet been announced, showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have ambitious ambitions for further plotlines, and rumours suggest that Netflix wants to reveal Season 2 early next year. Netflix is presently offering Wednesday for streaming.
