Christopher Nolan has released a thrilling trailer for his upcoming movie Oppenheimer. The physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, best known for developing the atomic bomb, is the subject of the movie. The physicist was one of those involved in the Manhattan project, a government initiative to develop nuclear weapons from 1942 to 1946, and served as head of the Los Alamos Laboratory where the bombs were actually put together.

The trailer offers the first comprehensive look at Christopher Nolan’s upcoming biopic, which centres on the development of the iconic atomic bomb and Cillian Murphy’s titular physicist as he battles to accept the destructive device he has made. While the Oppenheimer trailer may hide a lot of the movie’s actual action, one of the more intriguing lessons is how the story is told. Audiences were intrigued to see Nolan, an Oscar nominee, explore the black-and-white format since he last used it for the 2000 film Memento. Earlier trailers and images for the movie suggested that Nolan’s biopic would be in that style.

The opening of the trailer depicts Oppenheimer as a tormented individual whose imperfections are overlooked in favour of his genius. When reluctantly requested to assist in bringing the Second World War to a close, he cites one possible solution: a nuclear weapon constructed covertly in the desert that has the devastation potential to deter anyone from engaging in further combat.

As he surveys the large-scale bomb’s construction, a menacing musical score is playing. He can already see a pillar of fire engulfing their adversaries and putting an end to the battle in one swift motion. The main objection he encounters from superiors is that there is a non-zero risk that the blast may damage the atmosphere, which would not only destroy the United States’ adversaries but also the entire planet. As the explosion draws near and the disastrous repercussions become apparent, a countdown counts down while the music gradually intensifies. “We all know what happened there”, the trailer teases as the countdown reaches zero, but Nolan withholds his grand non-CGI bomb detonation for the time being.

Emily Blunt, who plays the scientist’s wife Kitty, co-stars with Murphy in the movie. Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Robert Downey Jr., Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, Michael Angarano, and Matthias Schweighöfer are among the several actors who have joined the ensemble. When the historical epic is released, it will face some fierce competition from A-list celebrities. Another great, artificial, and brightly pink movie, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, was scooping up stars at the same time that Oppenheimer was. As luck would have it, both movies are scheduled to come out on the same day, setting up a blockbuster war of epic proportions. The Oppenheimer movie debuts on July 21, 2023.
