The teaser trailer for Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s next Barbie film parodies a famous Stanley Kubrick film.

The short film opens with a lighthearted discussion of the history of dolls, making fun of the fact that girls have played with dolls ever since there have been small girls. However, when Barbie arrived, everything was different. A group of kids is surrounded by Robbie’s eponymous persona, who is destroying their baby dolls in what appears to be an act of adoration. The film also briefly introduces several of the supporting actors, including Ryan Gosling and Ncuti Gatwa, who appears to be getting ready for a lacrosse match.

Although not much is known about the next Barbie movie, Robbie has publicly stated that it would defy all predictions. We want to be like, “Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted,” Robbie said. “Things like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is.’ But our goal is to be like, “Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted

Since its introduction in 1959, the Barbie line of dolls has received a fair bit of criticism despite its enormous popularity. The manufacturer has made an effort to address criticism of the toy’s outmoded and stereotyped portrayal of women by featuring the eponymous figure in positions that deviate from the usual. Others have bemoaned the doll’s size, charging that they encourage young children to have an unhealthy and unrealistic body image.

It has a lot of baggage, I tell you! About the Barbie brand, Robbie stated. “And many of ties to the past. The intriguing ways to approach it, though, increase as a result. When people first hear about Barbie, they frequently assume they already know what the movie will be about. However, when they learn that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, they tend to change their minds.

Barbie’s narrative is still mostly unknown, but co-star Will Ferrell recently discussed how the movie addresses important contemporary concerns. It is both a loving respect for the company and, at the same time, sarcastic, according to Ferrell. ”

The movie Barbie premieres on July 21, 2023.
