With more than 1 billion watch hours, Tim Burton’s series Wednesday is among the top three most viewed series on Netflix. The fate of Wednesday is still up in the air, despite the fact that it has quickly risen to second place among English-language Netflix shows. There has not yet been a formal renewal for season 2 of the show. Given the series’ great ratings and accolades, many fans may be perplexed by this and ask what is causing the delay.
Prior to this week, only Squid Game and the fourth season of Stranger Things had achieved this feat on Netflix. This week, it became the third title to do so in a single month. Furthermore, it is now the No. 2 most watched English-language Netflix series ever, surpassing Ryan Murphy’s Dahmer. Given these circumstances, a second season of the show would surely be renewed.
In an interview with Variety, Peter Friedlander, the head of Netflix’s U.S. and Canadian scripted series, declined to confirm or deny whether the show had received official approval for a second season. Nevertheless, he found it difficult to contain his praise and admiration for a programme that had very quickly become not only entertaining but also culturally significant and engaging online, especially thanks to the TikTok trend featuring Wednesday dancing to Lady Gaga’s Bloody Mary.
Friedlander said, “You may know what I’m going to say, but I have nothing to confirm at this time. I am optimistic about “Wednesday.” We’ll leave it at that.Weirdly, because it feels different, but we’re just two weeks into the launch of “Wednesday.” So we’re still really at the beginning of this cultural phenomenon. And there’s a lot to absorb and learn about it. It’s striking how quick something like this can explode on Netflix, and there is a lot you want to hear back from fans and audiences. It’s not just the dance, it’s people dressing up and buying makeup and wanting to look like Wednesday Addams.”
He added, “The resurgence, for me, it’s something that’s been in the culture for a long time, but never this pronounced. It’s something that we want to study and understand why this is such a phenomenon. And I think so much of it is Jenna’s extraordinary performance at the center. But that supporting cast, across the board, are legends: Gwendoline Christie, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán and Christina Ricci!”
