Disney’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is currently the fifth-highest Hollywood movie of 2022 at the global box office with $767.8 million. However, the long running time and lack of action in the Marvel sequel are starting to be felt, particularly in foreign markets. With no Russia and China to boost its international numbers, Wakanda Forever is currently sitting at a mediocre $358 million from foreign markets as it enters its fifth week of release. Wakanda Forever recently became just the third movie of 2022 to pass $400 million at the domestic box office.
There was a significant amount of responsibility and duty on the producers and the entire team to continue Chadwick Boseman’s legacy after his passing. It appears that the movie has so far been successful in meeting up to expectations in the absence of the real Black Panther, whether measured by word-of-mouth or box office results.
According to a Variety report, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has dominated the domestic box office in North America for five weekends in a row. It earned an additional $11.1 million during the weekend while playing in 3,725 theatres, bringing the overall takings to $409 million. Interestingly, it is the first movie to top the weekend charts for five consecutive weekends since its predecessor Black Panther. Black Panther 2 is still in charge because there isn’t another blockbuster movie. This run will continue till the Friday release of James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way Of Water.
The United Kingdom continues to be the movie’s largest foreign market, earning $36 million there. Mexico ($32 million), France ($27 million), and Brazil ($18 million) are the next largest markets. The first Black Panther movie, which was also directed by Ryan Coogler of Wakanda Forever, finished with $700 million domestically and $1.3 billion globally. While Wakanda Forever isn’t even close to those figures, it will shortly surpass Doctor Strange, another Marvel sequel, in the Multiverse of Madness’ $411 million domestic total. But as things stand, even Doctor Strange 2‘s $955 million worldwide gross appears unattainable.
