A clear connection has been made between Britain’s decision to exit the EU and the alleged bigotry that the Duchess of Sussex faced thanks to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Netflix documentary.

The second episode, which was co-produced by the couple’s Archewell Productions, delves into the Brexit discussion, which is still a contentious issue in the UK six years after the 2016 vote.

Prince Harry and Markle have been more outspoken since separating from the family and moving to America, which is exceedingly rare for British royals to do. In Harry & Meghan, a little girl is seen telling a CNN reporter that she believes Markle’s relationship with Prince Harry, which started just weeks after the EU referendum, will help reduce prejudice in the UK. This scene precedes a part about Brexit.

This fairy tale is anchoring itself in a country that is having a rather caustic discussion about the European Union, according to famous British historian and diversity activist David Olusoga. Images of anti-immigration protesters and well-known Brexit supporter and Donald Trump associate Nigel Farage are shown after his remarks. Olusoga claims that “immigration in our nation is frequently a cipher for the race.”

“Trying to live out this storybook story of this fairytale princess” was a fortunate time for Britain, says Olusoga.

After relocating to the UK, Markle claims that racism became increasingly prevalent. She claims that because they raised the subject so much when she visited the UK, “people are highly aware of my race.” The majority of people hadn’t previously treated me “as a Black lady.” Prince Harry brings up a 2016 study by the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance in this part, which cautioned that tabloid media coverage of topics like immigration led to an “environment of hatred and rejection.”

Story Syndicate worked on the co-production of Harry & Meghan. The Handmaid’s Tale director Liz Garbus and Oscar-winning producer Dan Cogan are in charge of the business.
