The trailer for Kenya Barris’ new comedy You People, which stars Jonah Hill, Eddie Murphy, and a large comedic cast that includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus from Thunderbolts, Sam Jay from Saturday Night Live, Mike Epps from The Hangover, Nia Long from Friday, Deon Cole from Black-ish, Rhea Pearlman from Cheers, Molly Gordon from Booksmart, Andrew Schulz from Guy Code, La La Anthony from Power, and David Duchovny, has (X-Files). The launch of Netflix is scheduled for January 27, 2023.
Kenya Barris directs You People from a screenplay he co-wrote with Hill. Lauren London, David Duchovny, Nia Long, Sam Jay, Elliott Gould, Travis Bennett, Molly Gordon, Rhea Perlman, Deon Cole, Andrea Savage, Mike Epps, Emily Arlook, Alani La La Anthony, Bryan Greenberg, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus will appear alongside Hill and Murphy. David Hyman, Matt Dines, Hale Rothstein, Alison Goodwin, Mychelle Deschamps, Andy Berman, and Charisse Hewitt-Webster serve as executive producers, with Kevin Misher, Hill, and Barris serving as producers.
Barris is clearly putting his own spin on the “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” story of interracial romance – and the disapproving parent(s) trying to accept it – as evidenced by the film’s trailer. Eddie Murphy plays the father of Nia Long’s character, who plays Hill’s girlfriend, and Jonah Hill is playing the outsider white guy trying to fit in with an African-American family.
This You People trailer takes an unusual approach by featuring a small scene from the film rather than an overall story premise or a brief summary of the film’s events. The scene in question does, admittedly, a good job of establishing Barris’s awkward and edgy tone. It also hints at a deeper theme of the film’s plot, which is the idea of shining a light on the societal factors of love and race from a different, more unique angle in order to get us thinking about the real-life experiences we may be struggling with.
