Netflix has released the Main Trailer and Key Art for ‘The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House,’ Hirokazu Kore-first eda’s Netflix series. Hirokazu Kore-eda, acclaimed creator and Palme D’Or winner, will serve as showrunner, director, and writer for the nine-episode series, which will be released globally on Netflix on January 12, 2023, with Netflix, Story Inc., and BUN-BUKU Inc. co-producing.
The television show is based on Aiko Koyama’s manga MAIKO-SAN CHI NO MAKANAI-SAN (Weekly Shonen Sunday). The story, which takes place in Kyoto’s Geiko neighbourhood, stars Kiyo as a Makanai (person who prepares meals) at a home where Maiko (apprentice Geiko) and her family reside. The narrative describes the day-to-day activities of Kiyo and Maiko Sumire, a childhood friend who accompanied her from Aomori to Kyoto.
They live in a colourful world filled with Geiko and Maiko courtesans and delectable cuisine. With more than 2.7 million copies sold, the comic book is a best-seller and the winner of the 65th Shogakukan Manga Award.
Genki Kawamura (Confessions, Villain, Your Name, MIRAI) will produce alongside Kore-eda. Individual episodes are being directed by up-and-coming filmmakers including Megumi Tsuno (Ten Years Japan), Hiroshi Okuyama (Jesus), and Takuma Sato (Any Crybabies Around?).
Natsuki Deguchi plays Sumire, who comes from Aomori with Kiyo and is thought to be a “once-in-a-century talent” as a Maiko. Nana Mori plays Kiyo, the Makanai at the Maiko House. Ryoko, the high school daughter of the MaikoHouse’s manager, is played by Aju Makita. Chiyo, the previous manager of the MaikoHouse who still plays an important role in its operation, is played by Keiko Matsuzaka. Momoko, the most popular Geiko, is played by Ai Hashimoto. Mayu Matsuoka plays Yoshino, a former peer of Momoko’s who decides to return to the Geiko path. Takako Tokiwa plays Azusa, the MaikoHouse manager and Ryoko’s mother.
Based on Aiko Koyama’s original graphic novel “MAIKO-SAN CHI NO MAKANAI-SAN,” published by Shogakukan. Hirokazu Kore-eda is the showrunner. Genki Kawamura directed the film.
