Will Netflix renew Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life for a second season?

Gilmore Girls

Six years have passed since Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was released on Netflix, and fans are still yearning for another season (or two), but will it ever happen? Here is a summary of what was said. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, the acclaimed follow-up Netflix miniseries that saw the bulk of the ensemble reunite for a four-episode event, debuted almost ten years after the mothership series aired on The WB.

It has been more than 6 years since that miniseries first appeared on Netflix, and the show has now taken another break. We’ve had to refute claims and conjecture from false news websites over the years that claimed Netflix will be getting a season 2. They often appeared in November, with the most popular one occurring in 2021, the same year that Netflix released the first season of the limited series.

What have the cast and showrunner had to say about season 2 of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life?

Season 2 of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was renewed in 2017, but hopes were dashed when Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel stated there were no immediate plans to return to the characters. In 2018, Amy Sherman-Palladino told Vanity Fair about a possible continuation, saying, “It’s still a possibility.” Everyone has been extremely busy. Alexis [Bledel] is obviously very busy! It had to be the right story at the right time. It took a lot of effort to get it right the first time.”

Hopes were dashed once more in 2021 when Emily Gilmore’s actress Kelly Bishop said it was “very unlikely” that the show would return, adding that she would like to play the part again.

But with those four extra episodes, we’ve already done that in a sense. And to be quite honest, I don’t think it’s likely that a situation of that nature could come together because so many of the key players have already left and are occupied with other tasks and initiatives. It would have to be like those four additional episodes continued, but I simply don’t see it happening.

Because Mrs. Maisel is such a success and rightfully so, I don’t think Amy will be interested in it. She just seems like she wouldn’t want to rehash it, in my opinion. We all enjoyed it, and there may be a chance, but it doesn’t seem very likely. But I’d play her, absolutely. Simply said, I don’t think she would want to revisit it. Although there may be some opportunity and we all enjoyed it, it doesn’t seem very likely. Yes, I would play her again. I wish I could.

Netflix does not own the Gilmore Girls License

It’s important to note that Netflix does not own the underlying rights to Gilmore Girls and will not keep them forever. The primary Gilmore Girls series is currently licenced to Netflix globally through 2026, as we’ve already noted.
Additionally, we can confirm that the follow-up Netflix Original series is likewise planned to remain on Netflix until 2026. (10 years following its initial license). One possibility is that they produce an exclusive season for HBO Max rather than waiting for a revival when the rights return to Warner Brothers Television.
In conclusion, Netflix and Warner Bros. Television will be responsible for handling any Netflix revival, but nothing is set in stone outside the occasional tease.
