Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel, makes jokes about James Gunn being hired by DC

By claiming to be unaware of James Gunn’s plans following Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Kevin Feige makes fun jokes regarding Gunn’s new position managing the DC Universe. Since he oversaw the production of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie in 2014, Gunn has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In 2021, he started working with DC as well also started working with DC Suicide Squad. Later, Gunn also served as the series Peacemaker’s director. However, on October 25, when Gunn was named co-CEO and co-chairman of DC Studios with Peter Safran, it became clear that he would play a more significant position in the DC.

In an appearance at CCPX, Feige made light-hearted fun of Gunn’s new position (via ComicBook.com). Feige appeared not to be aware of Gunn’s work when asked by a fan what his plans were following the conclusion of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. He was joking because he has publicly endorsed Gunn’s involvement with the DC Universe. Still, it makes sense that Feige pretended to be unhappy with Gunn’s new role given the alleged continuing MCU vs. DCU animosity. Check out what he said below:

“James Gunn just released The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. He’s finishing his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, and then he has some work to do somewhere else, I don’t know where he’s going.”

Would Gunn Reappear In The MCU?

Although Gunn was departing the MCU and working “somewhere else,” Feige was joking. The conclusion of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie saga and the disclosure of his new position at DCU appear to mark the end of his tenure with the MCU. Gunn himself has recommended that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 be treated as his final MCU undertaking. For the duration of his deal, Gunn will only work for the DCU, however, anything is possible and he would be open to returning to the MCU in the future. According to reports, he has an exclusive four-year contract with DCU. Gunn doesn’t have any current plans to return to the MCU as a result, but he may do so in the future.

The DCU Can Be Changed By James Gunn?

Even though Gunn’s departure from the MCU may be difficult to accept, there is still much to be done with the DCU. By giving the franchise a central emphasis, he can alter and enhance the DCU in a significant way. DCU movies have lacked connection, direction, and concentration over the years, which has led to confusion and plot holes. Gunn has previously said that one of his first initiatives with the DC Universe will be to create a united universe. He assured that all of DC’s movies and television shows will be interconnected in the future.

Another significant shift that Gunn might implement is DC giving DCU movie filmmakers more creative latitude. Warner Bros. has been accused of intervening with Justice League and David Ayer’s 2016 picture Suicide Squad, which the directors have at least largely blamed for the films’ problems. Studio influence has caused some issues in DC. Gunn was given greater creative license when he remade The Suicide Squad, which performed significantly better than Ayer’s. Directors might be able to provide more complex films while still adhering to the comics and the DCU’s overall vision if given greater creative freedom.
