Netflix Has Released the Trailer for the Controversial New Documentary Harry & Meghan

Harry Meghan

The much-anticipated documentary series Harry & Meghan, starring Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, debuted its first trailer on Thursday. The 1 minute and 12 second “teaser” shows Harry and Meghan sharing previously unreleased private photos, some of which appear to show the duchess crying. In one shot, Harry is seen cocking his head back as his wife appears to wipe away her tears with both hands.

Why did you want to make this documentary, the interviewer in the background asks? A series of images in black and white appear. One image depicts Meghan curled up on a chair, her phone in her hands, and she appears upset. Nobody can see what goes on behind closed doors, according to Harry. The video then cuts to a picture of a serious-looking Kate, sitting next to William and with Meghan sitting behind her at the Commonwealth Day service before the Sussexes left the UK.

More images from the Queen Elizabeth burial show Meghan somberly wearing a black cap, while another shows a bank of press photographers as Harry explains, “I had to do everything I could to protect my family.” Meghan can be seen in a photo sitting in a car, appearing to be wiping away tears. Other, happier pictures of Harry with his wife include the couple hiking while holding flowers they had picked, wading in a stream with their dogs, a silhouette of Meghan while she is pregnant, dancing at their wedding, and sharing a kiss in their kitchen.

According to the series’ official synopsis, it includes commentary “from friends and family, most of whom have never spoken publicly about what they witnessed, and historians who discuss the state of the British Commonwealth today and the royal family’s relationship with the press.” Furthermore, “the series paints a picture of our world and how we treat each other, rather than just illuminating one couple’s love story.”

The first trailer is brief, featuring only these words from Harry and Meghan, as well as a slew of images, some intimate and clearly provided by the royal couple, and others more familiar, that highlight the pressure of living their lives under constant scrutiny. While brief, it should be more than enough to pique the interest of royals fans and those who enjoy a good peek behind the curtain of any hallowed, harried, secretive institution.
