The new mystery series 1899 has received nothing but love from Netflix subscribers.
The tale, which takes place in 1899, centers on a group of immigrants sailing aboard the steamer Kerberos when they run into a sinister mystery. The series is “perhaps the most convoluted series out there right now,” according to Jacob Stolworthy of The Independent, and it is “a program meant to baffle… for those with a propensity for mystery stacked atop mystery, it will suck you in hook, line, and sinker.”
However, despite 1899 being a genuine word-of-mouth hit for the streaming site, many fans have expressed frustration with the show on social media for being “too complex.”
“The worst show is 1899,” You should certainly watch that, one guy jokingly said. “I loathed every second of it. I was so irritated. It was so confusing and never made any sense. A different commenter said: “1899 might not seem as complicated as Dark, [the previous television series from the same producers], but that doesn’t mean it’s any less confusing than Dark with loads of references and puzzle pieces they sprinkle in the program.” These references included symbols, names, mythology, neuroscience, computational physics, philosophy, and numerology. It’s absolutely crazy.
Another user gushed, “The Netflix series 1899 could be the most confused mind f*** program I’ve ever viewed.. and so amazing that I can’t stop watching.” While many viewers have just found it difficult to keep up with the series’ many turns and turns, there may be a more technical explanation for some viewers’ perplexity. Fans of 1899 have advised others on how to watch the show on Netflix by making sure that one particular feature is disabled.
Additionally, many have questioned how the program and Dark are related.
