Cardi B’s butt-baring Halloween costume may lead to legal action from an artist

A modern pop artist known for altering The Simpsons in his works warns that Cardi B may face legal repercussions for copying his style in a Halloween Instagram post. Cardi B allegedly violated the rights of Italian artist Alessandro Palombo by using his work in her Oct. 31 Instagram, in which the rapper dressed as Marge Simpson in an outfit with a back opening that revealed her butt cleavage.

Cardi B, whose actual name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, utilized an image of Palombo’s artwork in the series of photos she uploaded but did not give him any credit for it. She did, however, acknowledge French designer Thierry Mugler in her Instagram comment, whose outfit served as the model for Palombo’s artwork.

In an Instagram post, Palombo, who made the illustration for Vogue UK in 2013, said that he emailed Cardi B but did not hear back from her. Cardi B violated “the most fundamental restrictions on copyright and Instagram policies,” according to Claudio Volpi, a lawyer representing Palombo when she used his artwork without credit. Volpi also revealed to Artnet that after the picture was uploaded to Cardi B and two of her team members’ social media pages, Palombo contacted them and asked them to clarify the mistake and provide a link to his Instagram profile.

When that demand was not met, Volpi formally warned Cardi B and her team that they could resort to legal action if they did not comply with the requests. Volpi confirmed this to the source. Cardi B won a case in October when a man claimed the rapper had used his tattoos on her obscene album cover, misappropriating his appearance.

Representatives did not immediately answer Insider’s request for comment for Cardi B and Palombo.
