James Gunn has succeeded once again! As the Guardians work to make Peter Quill’s holiday special, the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special gives us a taste of Christmas cheer. How do they intend to do that? Naturally, by taking Kevin Bacon and sending him to space as a gift. The Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas special is an all-around joy to see this season and a lovely little addition to their universe. Additionally, we get to witness Groot at a brand-new age that we haven’t seen before.

Groot, who is voiced by Vin Diesel, has evolved considerably since the original Guardians of the Galaxy film. Before becoming Baby Groot and Teenage Groot, he originally debuted as a fully grown Groot who gave his life to save his pals. From Thor: Love and Thunder to the special, Groot has since developed into Swoll Groot. At least, it is what Gunn and his friends are referring to him as. And sincerity? It’s a rather apt moniker. From now on, Swoll Groot will replace Holiday Special Groot.

Swoll Groot was produced using CGI as opposed to action capture, Gunn said in response to some inquiries about the special, which debuted today on Disney+. He also clarified why this Groot differs somewhat from his father in terms of attitude and physical appearance.

Given that Groot’s head is too tiny for his body, Gunn was questioned on Twitter about how the character got his current look. He replied, “Well, as we refer to him, YA Groot, or Swoll Groot, is expanding both upward and outward. As you can see, he differs from his father because he has a stockier physique and a friendlier demeanor.” He continued by tweeting, “Swoll Groot is 100% computer produced thanks to the excellent guys at Framestore and Wt Digital,” before describing how the character came to be.

Will Swoll Groot appear again in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? Who knows, but it was funny to see Groot appear as if he could slay anyone who attempted to bother his companions. Now available on Disney+ is the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The special’s trailer may be seen down below.
