What We Know So Far About the Netflix Live-Action Film Gundam

Gundam

Netflix is finally moving forward with its planned Gundam live-action adaptation after a protracted period of silence, which will delight and worry Gundam enthusiasts. The project, which was first revealed in 2018, now has a possible start date for production.
The film is produced by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and comes from Legendary Entertainment. You’re the Worst, Kong: Skull Island, and other films are among Vogt-Roberts’ credits. A live-action adaptation of Metal Gear Solid starring Oscar Isaac has also been entrusted to him. Vogt-Roberts discussed the impending film with EW in 2021, saying:

“My intention is to make this movie and provide an entry point for anyone who could remark, “I don’t know where to start [with Gundam],” so that they can be told, “This is where you start. This is where you enter.”
Gundam’s script was written by Brian K. Vaughan (Lost, Y: The Last Man, Runaways). The project was initially announced to be coming to Netflix in April 2021 by Netflix’s Geeked account in April 2018. Together with the Sunrise creative team and veteran Gundam producers Naohiro Ogata and Makoto Asanuma, Cale Boyter will oversee the project on behalf of Legendary.

What is the story of Gundam?

The Gundam movie on Netflix is mostly unknown because little information has been released regarding its plot.
We only know that it exists in the Gundam world. One teaser image of the RX-78-2 robot model, which was shown in concept art, is the only very slight hint. However, there have been rumours. According to a listing from many years ago, the movie would be produced in the style of a “overseas drama” and would take place in UC 0105, which in the anime is one year before to the events of Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway. The movie “may be a combination of lots of these different concepts, different timelines and what not,” Vogt-Roberts hinted in 2021.

Whether that was accurate or not will have to wait and be seen. The Gundam franchise has been around for four decades and is one of the most well-known IPs in Japanese history. There are many ways that the story could go.

Who is in the Gundam cast?

No cast members have been made public for the live-action Gundam film as of November 2022. Since casting is currently taking place, we will probably learn more about them in the upcoming months.

When will Gundam be available on Netflix?

The script for Netflix’s upcoming live-action Gundam movie is currently being written by the team. We’ve been told that production will begin in the summer of 2023 (we’ve been told specifically that the plan is for June 2023). However, we must emphasise that there is still a long way to go until then, and production schedules are subject to change.
Netflix hasn’t revealed any release dates for Gundam, but given the film’s possible June 2023 production start, we wouldn’t expect it to arrive before 2024.
