Idris Elba is the recognizable character in the upcoming Luther movie, as shown in the new pictures. Initially, Luther was a television show that ran on BBC One for five seasons between 2010 and 2019. Elba portrayed the detective John Luther, who was tasked with assisting Ruth Wilson’s murderous Alice Morgan in a number of instances.

Empire has released two first looks at the Luther sequel, whose filming was completed this spring. In the first, the detective is seen stalking across a desolate, snowy landscape, which is probably meant to mimic the intense drama and high stakes of the movie’s plot. Second, we look closely at Elba in his recognizable Luther costume.

What We Know About the film Luther

As these shots demonstrate, the movie will relocate Luther from his London offices to a more epic journey. Elba assures that the project will preserve the more understated gritty charm that has won over fans of the original Luther series for more than ten years, even though there will be a wider scope, more action, and higher stakes. They will use Luther’s new surroundings to explore a different aspect of his personality, developing the viewer-favorite character without significantly altering the essence of what he does in terms of his detective work.

More specifics of the plot are now well-guarded secrets. The movie, which will premiere on Netflix, doesn’t yet have an official release date, although it will probably do so in 2023. This is especially likely given that Netflix doesn’t typically engage in extensive publicity campaigns and that they have just energized the movie’s marketing apparatus with these fresh images from the Luther movie. It’s even conceivable that the film will premiere before the summer of 2023, but nobody is sure.

The only other information that is currently known about Luther is that Jamie Payne directed the film, with Neil Cross writing the screenplay. Payne has substantial television directing experience with programs including The Alienist, New Amsterdam, and Outlander and directing four episodes of the original series. In addition to Dermot Crowley reprising his role as DSU Martin Schenk, Idris Elba will return as Luther in the movie. Other cast members include Jess Liaudin, Cynthia Erivo, and legendary motion capture talent Andy Serkis, who was most recently seen in the Disney+ Star Wars series Andor.
