Netflix announced that Vikings: Valhalla, an epic mediaeval series, will return for Season 2 on January 12 right after the new year. The legendary explorer Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett), his fiery sister Freydis Eriksdotter (Frida Gustavsson), and the ambitious Nordic prince Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter) will continue their adventures as they navigate a time when Ragnar Lothbrok‘s (Travis Fimmel’s) Viking culture is in decline.

Vikings: Valhalla focuses on the cultural gap that existed between the Nordic kingdoms as a result of their brutal war with the English royal family and their clashing Pagan and Christian faiths. The illustrious three sets out on an epic trip during this time, fighting for survival and fame as they make their way throughout the country. Following the fall of Kattegat, they are at their lowest point in Season 2. They will travel through Scandinavia as fugitives looking for something in the beyond after having their spirits broken and their futures irrevocably changed.

With Season 2 soon to be released, series creator Jeb Stuart sat down with Tudum to talk about how the second season’s episodes will differ from the first season’s, which was primarily set in the well-known fjords of Kattegat. Stuart said, “The whole concept of Season 2 is that we take these three heroes who are in Scandinavia and blow them out of their comfort zones,” he said. “Season 2 for Harald and Leif is a road trip: It’s Thelma and Louise on the Dnieper River. The two of them will begin this incredible journey. Freydís has to go to Pomerania, which is a very difficult environment.”

Together with Morgan O’Sullivan, Michael Hirst, Sheila Hockin, Steve Stark, James Flynn, John Weber, Sherry Marsh, Alan Gasmer, and Paul Buccieri, Stuart not only created and served as the showrunner, but he also executive produced. They oversaw the success of Vikings: Valhalla for Netflix, which resulted in a March order for two more seasons. The second season of Vikings: Valhalla debuts on January 12.
