Odar and Friese discussed the conclusion of 1899 and revealed some of their ideas for a potential second season in an interview with IndieWire. According to Odar, they have discovered via their earlier work on Dark that the audience is smart and likes to solve problems. Some aspects of the story felt odd from the beginning in 1899. The third episode, which revealed that the passengers were being observed on many TV screens, made that much clear. With pocket electronics and other widgets, this distinctive period piece follows the pattern of modern technology appearing at random. Some of this is clarified in the conclusion, which explains that the journey is a simulation taking place in 2099. In order to forget about her son, Maura (Emily Beecham) and her husband willingly created the simulation and participated in it.
But there are still a lot of unsolved issues and a lot more about Maura’s past to be revealed.
