Plans for a “Deadpool” holiday film, according to Ryan Reynolds, “got lost in the shuffle” after the Walt Disney Company acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019. Reynolds made these remarks while promoting his upcoming movie, “Spirited,” an adaptation of Apple’s “A Christmas Carol,” in an interview with The Big Issue. Will Ferrell and Reynolds both appear in the comedy? Reynolds veered off the subject into his Marvel antihero when talking about the actor’s fondness for huge musical moments.

“A musical performance in a “Deadpool” movie would be something I’d enjoy. Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese, and I wrote a Christmas movie with Deadpool four years ago. But it was never produced because Disney’s acquisition of Fox caused it to get lost in the shuffle. “Perhaps we’ll get to film that movie someday. It’s a complete “Deadpool” Christmas movie, however, it’s not a musical. Thus, one day.

The first “Deadpool” movie’s co-writers were Reese and Wernick. For the 2018 follow-up, the duo came back and co-wrote the book with Reynolds.

The “Deadpool” Christmas project Reynolds alluded to should not be confused with “Once Upon a Deadpool,” a PG-13 adaptation of 2018’s “Deadpool 2” that has a framing mechanism emulating “The Princess Bride” and many ornamental holiday-themed themes. In the year after that, Disney successfully finalized the acquisition of Fox, bringing the “Deadpool” property under their control.

Reynolds is currently working on a different “Deadpool” sequel under the Disney banner that will contribute to the studio’s ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine in “Deadpool 3,” which is an X-Men fan favorite. For what it’s worth, the studio has set a release date of Nov. 8, 2024, which is not too far from the holiday season.
