In just six days since its release, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever from Disney and Marvel has surpassed the $400 million mark at the global box office, excluding a few territories that debuted a few days earlier. In comparison, after almost a month of release, DC’s Black Adam is lagging with just under $350 million worldwide. Earlier this year, fellow Marvel sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ $187 million opening weekend record for 2022 was broken by Wakanda Forever’s $181 million domestic debut weekend.

For a total worldwide profit of $400 million, the movie has earned $213 million domestically and an extra $187 million internationally. The Incredible Hulk and Captain America: The First Avenger were two of the first films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Wakanda Forever has now surpassed their lifetime box office totals. Wakanda Forever has also outperformed the worldwide lifetime earnings of Black Widow from the previous year, but Wakanda Forever was simultaneously released on the Disney+ streaming service, which required a premium access charge. By the end of its second weekend, it will have surpassed the $402 million global lifetime gross of Eternals and the $432 million and $449 million global lifetime gross of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Thor, respectively.

In the wake of King T’Challa’s passing, Ryan Coogler, who also directed the first movie, examines themes of loss and family in Wakanda Forever. The untimely death of the film’s lead Chadwick Boseman in 2020 from cancer following a four-year battle with the disease in private had a significant impact on the film’s production. Letitia Wright portrays Shuri in Wakanda Forever, alongside Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, Florence Kasumba as Ayo, Michaela Coel as Aneka, Angela Bassett as the Queen Mother Ramonda, Mabel Cadena as Namora.

The United Kingdom ($14.6 million) has so far proven to be the movie’s most lucrative international market, followed by Mexico ($12.9 million) and France ($11.5 million). For itself, Wakanda Forever has established a high standard. The 2018 release of the first Black Panther movie was a box office sensation. The domestic box office total of $700 million made it the sixth-biggest domestic finish in history. It earned $1.3 billion globally to wrap up its run.
