The brilliant new show from the producers of “the cleverest show of all time” is now available. The New Netflix series 1899, which follows passengers on an ocean liner in the 19th century, has received reviews. The plot involves a diverse mix of persons being compelled to solve a difficult puzzle after coming across another ship that was thought to have vanished on the open sea.

Fans of Dark won’t care what 1899 is about, though, because the show’s producers are also responsible for Dark. With their latest “mystery box” endeavor, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar’s follow-up to the German-language time travel mystery series, which achieved cult status over three seasons, appears to have added even more drama. The term “mystery box” is used to describe television programs with high-concept mysteries that provide solutions in pieces, leaving the audience to piece them together. Examples from the past include Lost and The OA.

Dark’s confusing plot compelled viewers to take notes as they went along, which both astounded and irritated them in equal measure. But those who persevered to the finish have dubbed the program the most “intelligent” and “complex” of all time. Reviews claim that 1899 somehow goes even further.

“It’s creepy, unsettling, cold to the touch, and, unless you’re sitting straight upright taking notes, occasionally indecipherable,” The Telegraph adds. In addition, Power describes 1899 as “an expertly-crafted puzzle” and cautions readers against “zoning out in front of the television.” Radio Times claims that when watching the “genre-bending” presentation, “audience patience will be rewarded.” The new show’s final product, however, has not been well received; the Evening Standard and Inverse have referred to it as a “slog” and “a drag.”

Currently, 1899 may be seen on Netflix.
