A brand-new animated Star Wars anthology series is called Tales of the Jedi. It is a collection of short stories that are set in the prequel era, when the Jedi are still very much present in the galaxy. The major characters of the new series are Count Dooku and Ahsoka Tano, both of whose backstories are thoroughly explored. Ahsoka Tano features the return of Ashley Eckstein. Each episode depicts the trips taken by Dooku and Ahsoka as well as the choices they make to reach to their final destinations. Tales of the Jedi, which was created by Dave Filoni, has received accolades from critics for being the ideal example of storytelling.

Even though the miniseries only consists of a few shorts, it contains a tonne of fresh material that has never previously been revealed about the Star Wars world. The presence of Dooku before he became Darth Tyrranus makes the series noteworthy even if Ahsoka receives some screen time (via EW). It’s novel and intriguing to see Dooku in such an unexpected situation with the good people.

Even though the Star Wars Sith Lord Count Dooku appears in two of the prequel movies and The Clone Wars animated series, not much is known about him beyond the knowledge that he was a former Jedi Master and puppeteers the separatists to carry out the orders of his master Lord Sidious. He briefly appears in a few skirmishes in the movies until being killed by Anakin Skywalker, all the while his Master encourages Anakin. Even less is known about Count Dooku’s training, his relationship with his Padawan Qui-Gon Jinn, and what led him to the Dark Side than is known about his life before he left the Jedi Order.

It was never made apparent if Dooku’s values were real. We learn more about his dislike of the senate’s corruption in Tales of the Jedi (which we already knew about through the perspectives of other characters). Dooku also makes it clear that he hates the Jedi for what they’ve turned into and how they maintain the status quo rather than actually seeking out justice and maintaining peace as they should. Tales of the Jedi portrays Count Dooku as a more idealistic Jedi, which is in part what causes him to turn to the dark side, as opposed to the grim and pessimistic character we are used to seeing.

We didn’t witness Qui-response Gon’s to his sad death in The Phantom Menace; instead, we saw Dooku’s in Tales of the Jedi. Qui-Gon, however, did respond to his tragic death in The Phantom Menace. Dooku is now battling his dark emotions and a sense of betrayal from the Jedi Order. Dooku suffered a severe blow when he witnessed his youthful and enthusiastic pupil perish at the hands of a Sith on Darth Sidious’ command. He must now pick a side, and Qui-passing Gon’s only fuels the flames of the evil side. Qui-passing Gon’s dealt Dooku yet another blow to his ideals, and it served as one of the concluding blows that cemented Dooku’s decision to turn to the dark side.
