There may be some news soon regarding Netflix’s foray into The Chronicles of Narnia. After four long years, we now know that Netflix is planning to launch the franchise with two films, with Greta Gerwig reportedly in the running to helm both. So far, there have been two rounds of Narnia Netflix news. Of course, the first news was the multi-year partnership between Netflix and The C.S. Lewis Company, which allowed them to create television shows and motion pictures based on the bestselling books. This announcement was made in October 2018.

Then, a little less than a year later, Netflix revealed that Matthew Alrich had joined the franchise as a “creative architect” and would be in charge of all future development. The artist is well recognised for his work at Disney Pixar, where he co-wrote the movie Coco, among other films. Except for the occasional rumour or leak, everything has been quiet since then. Four years have passed since the initial announcement. But in early 2021, there was some movement that we first learned about. We know that Netflix contacted several directors for a movie at the beginning of the year. In the present, Greta Gerwig is reportedly in talks to helm the first two Narnia movies that Netflix may produce.

For this report, Netflix made no comments. Famous for her work on Little Women, Lady Bird, Mistress America, and Frances Ha, Gerwig is an accomplished actor and director. Gerwig will play the role of Babbette in the 2022 film White Noise. The Netflix Original film will have a brief theatrical run before being released on Netflix at the end of December 2022. Along with writing and directing the upcoming 2023 Warner Bros. film Barbie, Gerwig is also attached to write the 2024 Disney live-action adaptation of Snow White.

The specifics of these Narnia movies are unknown. Does Netflix simply want to adapt all seven of Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia books, starting with The Magician’s Nephew and ending with The Last Battle? (There are a total of seven Narnia books; The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe is the second in the chronology but by far the most well-known.) Or perhaps Gerwig is working on a prequel or spinoff?
