The season 2 finale ended in a rather desolate tone. While the fight between the Camerons and Pogues is likely to continue in the third season, Pope’s warning, “It’s not over,” heightens the fans’ excitement, which can only be realized in the third season. Season 2 ended with the news that John B’s father is still alive after being sundered on the island. This begs the issue of how and why Big John has returned, as well as what he intends to accomplish.

This is what John Pate had to say about Big John in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“John B’s relationship with his dad is a huge theme and having his dad back around and eventually they’re going to meet back up and John B has to reconcile his idealized version of his dead dad with the reality of his alive dad. It gives us a lot of thematic father-son stuff to work with.”

On a more romantic note, star Madelyn Cline teased ET that season 3 will go deeper into their marriage. Cline stated:

“It’d be really fun in season 3, if we get one, to see them actually start to truly get to know each other in a very real sense. They’re married, but they actually kind of don’t know a whole lot about each other. I feel like that would be really fun. They’ve obviously been through a lot together.”

He stated, “I think a lot of loose ends are going to get tied up.” There will be many questions resolved. Additionally, these children will be subjected to the usual abuse.
