Following a devastating box office decline, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, from Marvel Studios and Disney, gave Hollywood and theater owners a much-needed pre-Thanksgiving feast. Despite having to proceed without Chadwick Boseman, who played the title character in 2018’s Black Panther, after the actor passed away from cancer in August 2020, Wakanda Forever, directed by Ryan Coogler, opened to a record $180 million domestically over the Nov. 11–13 weekend and $330 million globally.

“The film had a strong first weekend with audiences of all ages. Tony Chambers, Disney’s head of theatrical distribution, said Marvel and Ryan Coogler “did a wonderful job addressing the sad loss of Chadwick Boseman, and we’ve seen a tremendous response from fans as to how it appropriately honored his legacy.” As the first Hollywood studio tentpole in 2018 with a predominately Black cast, Black Panther quickly became a cultural sensation and earned more than $1.34 billion at the global box office.

The cast of Wakanda Forever includes Martin Freeman, Lupita Nyong’o, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Danai Gurira, Florence Kasumba, and Dominique Thorne as the superhero Riri Williams and Tenoch Huerta as Namor, a newcomer to Marvel. The Twilight Saga: New Moon ($142.8 million), The Twilight Saga — Breaking Dawn: Part 2 ($141 million), The Twilight Saga — Breaking Dawn: Part 1 ($138.1 million), and 2019’s Frozen 2 ($130.3 million) all broke the previous record for November box office receipts. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($158.1 million) was the prior record-holder. Studios like to open their tentpoles closer to Thanksgiving, so they often run into December. Marvel/Disney chose to introduce Wakanda sooner.

Wakanda Forever scored an excellent PostTrak exit rating and an A CinemaScore from viewers. The original Black Panther, on the other hand, scored a much sought-after A+ while making well over $1.38 billion worldwide. Disney and Marvel are planning on giving Wakanda Forever a lengthy run through the Thanksgiving holiday and until the release of fellow Disney tentpole Avatar on December 16. However, it is still too early to predict where the Black Panther sequel will ultimately be released worldwide.
