James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, is preparing to launch a new era for the DC Universe on Warner Bros. Discovery, and the company just previewed what their future ambitions would entail.

With Gunn and Peter Safran joining up to lead DC Studios as co-CEOs, there have been a number of significant changes to how WB is creating its superhero movie world in recent weeks. By drawing influence from its most immediate rival, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the duo will be able to create what they believe would be a unified and coherent DCU of films, series, and more.

With Black Adam, DC’s most recent theatrical release before four new films take center stage in 2023, fans may be able to observe the first indications of that regime change. Following that, there is a completely blank slate for DC, and many people are curious as to what Gunn and Safran will be working on in their first few weeks of employment. The new dynamic duo unveiled what’s in the works for the first time in one of their first public appearances after assuming their positions.

Heads at DC and Warner Bros. prepare fans for the future

According to Deadline, DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran attended a recent town hall meeting with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav to discuss the new organization for the DC Universe. This was the new DC leaders’ first open town hall gathering since their first announcement.

The group unveiled their idea to write a “bible” for the DC Universe (DCU), which unifies live-action films, TV shows, animation, video games, and other media. The company already has plans to integrate the worlds of movies, animation, and even video games into one coherent story, so this might be a very ambitious move. The Wrap stated that Safran elaborated on this idea, stating that the DCU would be telling “one huge overarching story” across a variety of media:

This was such a unique opportunity to tell one great overarching story … One beautiful big story across film, television, gaming, live-action, and animation.”

What Significant Events Are Ahead for the DCU?

Given how fragmented the franchise has gotten in recent years, it is not surprising to see that James Gunn and Peter Safran are enthusiastic about overhauling the DCU for the film and television sides. Nevertheless, based on this quotation, it seems that the two are attempting to accomplish far more than simply changing what viewers see on television and the big screen.

Games like Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League have recently launched or are about to be available in stores, and animation and gaming have long been important components of DC’s extended adventures. Based on this latest report, it appears that games like these may even be a part of the large-scale narrative that Gunn and Safran are working to develop over the next few years using franchises like Aquaman, The Flash, and even Black Adam. It will probably take some time before any specifics about the DC Universe roadmap are made public because the two new CEOs only began working for the company in early November 2022. DC fans, however, are in for a massive influx of news and projects as the 2020s advance if those plans prove to be as ambitious as they are predicted to be.
