The Luckiest Girl Alive on Netflix is based on a real tale, right?

The most popular movie on Netflix right now, Luckiest Girl Alive, which stars Mila Kunis, has many fans asking if it is based on a true tale.

Ani, played by Kunis, is a writer whose seemingly perfect life begins to fall apart when she is forced to confront a school massacre she witnessed as a youngster in a true-crime documentary. Many fans of Luckiest Girl Alive have called for stricter trigger warnings due to its graphic content, but is it based on true events?

The solution is not obvious. Technically, the movie is based on Jessica Knoll’s 2015 mystery book of the same name. In one book, many of the adolescent Ani’s friends gang rape her during a home party. She tells her pals Arthur and Ben what occurred, and they talk about how the same boys who harassed Ani also bullied them. Later, in the school, Arthur and Ben commit a mass massacre.

When the book was initially published, Knoll said it was an entirely fictional work and revealed that the rape narrative had been influenced by the experiences of other women she had heard about. But the following year, Knoll confessed that her attack, which she endured when a student attending a private school, served as inspiration for Ani’s account of gang rape in a piece that was published in Lena Dunham’s feminist journal Lenny Letter.

Later, while discussing why she was hesitant to disclose to others that the novel was based on her experience, Knoll said in an interview with Today that she “always feels a bit unworthy of being labeled like strong or courageous, because I had to [open up] in fiction.”

“I had these competing forces inside of me. I yearned for the release of putting my experience down on paper and the confirmation that what had occurred to me was rape. I required that.” But on the other hand, she said, “I was afraid that others would read it and draw the same inference that they did when I was in high school, which was that there had been no violation and that I had somehow taken part in it.”

The book’s and the movie’s plot about a school shooting isn’t based on a particular real-life incident.
