The teaser for Netflix’s heartfelt Japanese series The Makanai Cooking for the Maiko House has been released. Hirokazu Kore-eda wrote and directed it. The first season of the show will consist of nine episodes. The Makanai Cooking for the Maiko House is based on Aiko Koyoma’s original superhit Manga Maiko-san Chi No Makanai-san Maiko-san, which has sold over 2.7 million copies worldwide. The show takes place in Kyoto and follows the lives of childhood best friends Sumire Harai (Natsuki Deguchi) and Kiyo Nozuki (Nana Mori).

Sumire and Kiyo arrive in Kyoto to become apprentice geishas, but only Sumire is eligible. Kiyo now prepares meals for the Maiko House employees. The cooks’ lives as apprentice geisha and Makanai will be featured in the Japanese series. Viewers will undoubtedly enjoy images of delectable Japanese cuisine. The drama will follow their daily lives as well as the friendship of the two foil characters.

The series is directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda (Air Doll live-action film). Also directing are Megumi Tsuno, Hiroshi Okuyama, and Takuma Sato. The planning is overseen by Genki Kawamura (Detroit Metal City live-action film). The scripts are being written by Kore-eda, Tsuno, Okuyama, Sato, and Mami Sunada. Executive producers are Yoshihiro Furusawa and Naomi Sat. The series is produced by Kenji Yamada, Ai Kashima, and Eiji Kitahara. Associate producer Risa Kitabayashi

The manga’s plot takes place in Kyoto’s “hanamachi” geisha district. After finishing their work late at night, geisha spend the night resting at a lodge in order to prepare for the next day. Kiyo, an Aomori native, works as a cook in a geisha lodge in Kyoto after graduating from junior high school and leaving home. She also has a maiko, or apprentice geisha, friend named Sumire. Kiyo in Kyoto: From the Maiko House is an anime adaptation of the manga. The anime debuted on NHK World with English subtitles in February 2021, and new episodes are released once a month. The anime is also available on Crunchyroll.

Genki Kawamura is in charge of the project, which is a collaboration between Netflix, Story Inc., and the Bun-Buku Company. Makanai Cooking for the Maiko House will be available on Netflix in January 2023.
