The Winchesters, a Supernatural spinoff, is still uncertain about its future. According to a report by Deadline, the horror-action show might not be renewed for a second season because Nexstar, the new owner of The CW, decided not to order further episodes of John and Mary Winchester’s escapades. According to inside sources, the network is making significant budget cuts, which might affect how long the new series will run.

The Winchesters’ Season 1 will only have 13 episodes if additional chapters aren’t ordered. In addition to Walker: Independence not being picked up for back orders, the Supernatural spinoff is not the only series in jeopardy. In the 1970s, the CW series follows young John Winchester (Drake Rodger) and Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly) as they fall in love and look for their fathers who have vanished. The prequel is closely related to the original series while focused on different characters. Jensen Ackles serves as the show’s executive producer in addition to narration and occasional on-camera appearances.

The CW’s new president, Dennis Miller, was careful to emphasise that no choices had been made for the upcoming season. This would imply that the absence of new episodes does not necessarily imply that the show is about to be cancelled. The Winchesters, which has just broadcast four episodes of its first season, performs reasonably well in the ratings compared to what The CW typically attracts and is a part of a well-known brand. Naturally, the second season of The Winchesters would be successful if the ratings remained the same or even rose.

But more generally, in line with The CW’s older audience, the network is abandoning dramas with a younger demographic in favour of less expensive, unscripted series. That essentially means that it’s doubtful that viewers will witness a repetition of Supernatural’s incredible 15-season run on television as cancellations continue, including series like Stargirl and Nancy Drew. The Winchesters will presumably have a shorter run based on the present course of The CW and the nature of the prequel itself.
