Dangerous Liaisons, a Starz series, has been renewed for a second season before its first season launch on November 6. The series begins before the well-known story, putting a light on how the events lined up, in contrast to most retellings of the fabled tale first written by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The dramatic prologue to the love-and-seduction-and-status-ascending tale stars Nicholas Denton as Vicomte de Valmont alongside Alice Englert as Camille.

The plot, which takes place in the 18th century, is focused on Camille and Valmont , two lovers who might not be acting in their relationship’s best interests. After being adopted by the Marquise de Merteuil, Camille is trying to move up the social scale in order to establish herself, but Valmont could have a few tricks up his sleeve. The cast will also include Kosar Ali as Camille’s best friend Victoire and Carice Van Houten as the noblewoman Jacqueline de Montrachet in addition to Manville, Englert, and Denton.

The series is the most recent adaptation of a vast array of on-screen works featuring the lovers-turned-rivals. Dangerous Liaisons, starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, Uma Thurman, and Keanu Reeves, was Stephen Frears’ own period piece adaption of the narrative that received multiple nominations and victories at the 1988 Academy Awards ceremony. With a more up-to-date interpretation, the 1999 classic Cruel Intentions by Roger Kumle introduced the tale to a new generation. The cast list featured many stars from the ’90s greats, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair.

It’s not surprising that Starz opted to go ahead and give the prequel series a second season given the story’s enduring popularity. The first episode will be available starting at midnight on November 6 on the Starz app, all Starz streaming, on demand, and worldwide through the Lionsgate+ streaming service.
