It’s Possible for The Big Bang Theory to Return, but There’s a Catch

Big Bang Theory was one of the most-watched comedies of the previous ten years, airing from 2007 to 2019. It was routinely one of the most viewed shows on television, garnered 10 Emmy awards, and made the phrase “Bazinga!” ubiquitous. There have been rumors of a resurrection for this iconic comedy, like many others.

Many sitcoms have staged comebacks or reunions, typically with a slight twist. Many of the original cast members returned for the revivals of Full House and Boy Meets World, playing the parent roles of the original stars in place of the original young actors. The story of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was updated for a contemporary drama.

Penny’s actress Kaley Cuoco suggested using the successful Friends reunion as a model for getting the ensemble back together. In an interview with Variety Magazine, she expressed her desire to create a Friends-themed special that had recollections, quizzes, and video snippets. The creators of Big Bang Theory, Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady had another notion.

Entertainment Weekly spoke with Lorre and Prady to mark the 15th anniversary of the show’s debut season. Although they also believed the last scene they had created was too beautiful, they would have enjoyed having the original actors return as the characters one last time. They’re unsure how a comeback might take place because the closure was so astounding. The two agreed that if it were to be reproduced, they would want to have Sheldon Cooper handle the COVID-19 pandemic. Fans were never able to see the character’s response to the pandemic because the program ended one year before it started.

Jim Parson’s Sheldon, according to Lorre, would have adored it. Sheldon had a well-known aversion to crowds and interacting with people in general; he would have preferred to stay at home alone and stay away from the outside world. Brady said that Sheldon’s fear of germs would have made the situation much funnier. People would have had to take him seriously since he is a self-described authority on germs, right? Brady said that a pandemic episode including Bernadette, a microbiologist, and Sheldon would have been fantastic. Prady even imagined a hypothetical scene in which Bernadette, when Sheldon attempts to explain her profession to her, screams at him in her infamously high-pitched voice.

Fans find it difficult to conceive of not seeing the characters again, even how well-liked the program was. The time for a pandemic-related special is probably past, but previous programs have shown that it’s never too late to bring back a favorite sitcom.
