Henry Cavill explains what distinguishes his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes from the numerous other movie depictions of the character. In the 2020 Netflix movie Enola Holmes, which stars Millie Bobby Brown as the title character, he made his acting debut. Enola, Sherlock’s younger sister, chooses to solve the mystery of her mother’s disappearance on her own after growing up in the shadow of her older brother (Helena Bonham Carter).
By the time Enola Holmes 2 airs on Netflix on November 4, she will have built a reliable detective business with that case behind her. In the movie, she’ll be asked to help solve another missing person’s case, this time the sister of a young woman who works at a match factory. David Thewlis, who played Harry Potter, and Sharon Duncan Brewster will also appear in the sequel’s cast, along with Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge), Lestrade (Adeel Akhtar), and Edith (Susie Wokoma).
On the most recent episode of Josh Horowitz’s podcast Happy Sad Confused, Cavill appeared as a guest. He admitted that he wasn’t convinced he would be able to embody Sherlock in a way that was distinct from the various performers who have played him in the past when he was initially offered the part. He came to the idea that he would like to play the role after realizing that the character’s relationships with Enola are different from how he conducts himself in public because “there is a secret compassion to this character.”
What Separates Cavill’s Sherlock From Other Versions
Numerous actors have played the famous detective Sherlock Holmes over the years, making him one of the literary characters that are most frequently adapted for film and television. There are more traditional depictions of these characters by actors like Basil Rathbone and John Barrymore as well as more contemporary interpretations like Benedict Cumberbatch, Robert Downey Jr., and even Will Ferrell. Cavill approached this new role appropriately, taking the character’s legacy seriously.
It is true that Sherlock acts radically differently in the story than he typically does, as was explored in Enola Holmes, and will probably continue with his enlarged role in Enola Holmes 2. Sherlock usually takes the initiative, and his dominant dynamic is his supremacy over his friend Dr. John Watson. It drastically alters how his character interacts with a mystery to have someone who is both a valued family member and has a wit that rivals his own, which is probably why fans took to his portrayal of the role more or less right away.
