According to a fresh local source, one of Netflix’s top new Brazilian shows for 2022 will not return for a second season. Maldivas was cancelled by Netflix after only one season. Natalia Klein developed and acted in the comedy-drama, which premiered on Netflix worldwide on June 15th, 2022. The official series summary is as follows: “A young lady arrives into an upscale condo neighbourhood to solve a mystery, where she meets its unique – and suspect — people.”
The cancellation was announced by the Brazilian publication iG (via its People branch) and journalists Gabriel Perline and Gabriela Ramos. On October 25th, they revealed that the series will not return for additional episodes.
According to the site, “the entire cast has already received a notice that their schedules are free, as there will be no more new seasons, which took everyone by surprise, as Maldives was highly remarked on social media.”
How well did Maldivas fare on Netflix, and was it related to the show’s cancellation? Almost definitely, the show was in the Brazilian top ten for a number of days, but according to FlixPatrol, it only lasted 14 days in the TV top ten, earning 108 points. The Maldives did not spread to many other areas either. It was in the top ten in Portugal for only 9 days. It also gained a few points in Jamaica and Mauritius. The show also appeared in the Non-English worldwide top 10s between June 12th and June 26th, garnering 19.76 million hours but shortly disappearing, as did the top 10s.
Maldivas will be added to the expanding list of initiatives that have been shelved in 2022, though the list is likely much longer given that we don’t always learn about shelved projects. However, there is still a tonne of Brazilian content being produced by Netflix. Whether it’s the Brazilian reality series or the written series, there’s a lot coming up. The untitled Candelaria massacre, DNA do Crime, B.O., Meu Cunhado é um Vampiro, as well as new seasons of Sintonia, Back to 15, and Smother-in-Law were all released by Netflix in September 2022. The future of other Brazilian games like Reality Z, Kissing Game, Gloria, Summer Heat, and Omniscient has still to be announced, so we’re still waiting.
