Henry Cavill claims that he never lost faith in his ability to play Superman in the future. But when he eventually put the cloak back on, even he was taken aback by how emotional the experience was.

When a contract to appear in one scene in Black Adam came together, Cavill was working six days a week on Netflix’s The Witcher, he said in an interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz on Wednesday night at the 92nd Street Y. The actor recalls that he had to ask The Witcher crew for approval, but that “it was so top secret we couldn’t tell them anything.”

He put on the outfit he wore in 2013’s Man of Steel, his first appearance as the hero, which he picked due to its emotional resonance when he arrived at the Warner Bros. studio in the U.K. for the top-secret filming. During the chat, which was a live recording of Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Cavill added, “I selected that one in particular because of the nostalgia tied to the outfit.” That ranks among my career’s pinnacle moments. It’s wonderful to have the chance to wear it once more.

The discussion follows a week in which Cavill made headlines. For the first time in five years, the actor made a comeback on the big screen as Superman in Black Adam. In a social media video posted on Monday, he also revealed that he will portray Superman in upcoming DC films, claiming that Black Adam was merely a “little taste” of what was to come.

For the first time, Cavill played the role of Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Since then, the DC Universe has undergone enormous changes. James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, and Peter Safran, the producer of The Suicide Squad, have been chosen to the top positions at DC under the recently established DC Studios, which will produce Cavill’s upcoming Superman films.

Cavill expressed his excitement about Gunn’s hiring by saying that he is “really pleased about it” and made fun of reports that he would play Loki in Marvel comics by saying that if Gunn could switch between Marvel and DC, then maybe he could as well.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned from sources that Warner Bros. is accepting writing proposals for a Man of Steel sequel. When Horowitz enquired as to if there was any news regarding writers or directors, Cavill declined to comment: “I’m unable to discuss anything right now… But eventually, I’ll be able to tell everyone about the great things that are coming.

In his thank-you statement, Cavill praised the filmmaker and said, “He’s a great man, and I am grateful for everything he’s done for me. … In terms of my profession, those are important moments for me. Then, things started to shift. I have good memories of them. … If Zack is watching, please accept my gratitude.

Cavill did have some ideas about the future. The actor stated, “I’m thrilled to represent a narrative with a Superman who is extremely joyful. The character has a very promising future ahead of him.”
