The first official trailer for “In Her Hands,” a Netflix documentary produced by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, has been released. The film, which received the audience award at the 18th Camden International Film Festival last month, was shot over a two-year period and chronicles the tale of Zarifa Ghafari, who, at the age of 26, became one of Afghanistan’s first female mayors and the country’s youngest mayor ever. The film follows her struggle for survival against the backdrop of her country’s rapid demise, as Western soldiers announce their withdrawal and the Taliban retakes power. In the midst of these seismic shifts, Zarifa must make the most difficult decision of her life.

The documentary film In Her Hands follows the tale of Zarifa Ghafari, who at 26 became one of Afghanistan’s first female mayors and the youngest person to ever hold the position. It was shot during two stormy years. The movie follows her struggle for survival as her nation rapidly disintegrates in the background. Zarifa and women all throughout the nation are faced with a new reality when the Western military signal their withdrawal and the Taliban begin their retake of power. In the midst of these seismic shifts, Zarifa must make the hardest choice of her life. Filmmakers Tamana Ayazi and Marcel Mettelsiefen, who previously directed the documentaries Watani: My Homeland and The War of Afghan Women, are working together for the first time to co-direct In Her Hands.

The Sept. 9 Toronto premiere of “In Her Hands,” which was helmed by Tamana Ayazi and Marcel Mettelsiefen (“Watani: My Homeland”), took place. The Clintons worked as executive producers on the movie, which is their first non-fiction production under their HiddenLight Productions, which has its London headquarters. The movie also has co-producers from the Propagate Content company of Ben Silverman. “‘In Her Hands’ is a remarkable work of human storytelling that provides us with a unique look at and genuine understanding of the struggles that women have endured in Afghanistan recently. We had to get involved as soon as we learned about this endeavour, the Clintons said in a statement.

Jonathan Schaerf and Juan Camilo Cruz are the movie’s producers. The Clintons, Ayazi, Mettelsiefen, Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, Siobhan Sinnerton, George Loening, Johnny Webb, Roma Khanna, Stephen Ellis, Rob Sharenow, and Elaine Frontain Bryant are among the executive producers. Since its founding in 2020, HiddenLight has concentrated on producing high-quality unscripted, scripted, and documentary entertainment for TV, film, and digital platforms. The Clintons and Sam Branson created the business. If I Could Tell You Just One Thing, a YouTube Originals series, was its first undertaking and it premiered in the summer of 2021. This fall saw the release of the Apple TV+ series “Gutsy Women,” which is based on the Clintons’ best-selling book “The Book of Gutsy Women: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience.”
