The Sony comedy, which was adapted from the best-selling book A Man Called Ove, was initially slated to debut throughout the country on December 14, two days before Disney and 20th Century released James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water.

A Man Called Otto will instead make its debut on Christmas Day in a few New York and Los Angeles cinemas before going nationwide on January 13, 2023. The film is eligible for award consideration thanks to its limited release on December 25.

The Marc Forster-directed film A Man Called Otto tells the tale of Otto Anderson (Hanks), a cranky widower who finds happiness in berating and criticizing his irritated neighbors.

Otto finds his counterpart in the quick-witted and heavily pregnant neighbor who moves in next door when a young, active family does. This encounter sparks an unlikely friendship that will flip Otto’s world upside down.

Along with Mariana Treviso, Rachel Keller, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, the film is also starring Ben Forster, David Magee, and Frederik Backman.

Rita Wilson, Hanks, Gary Goetzman, and Fredrik Wikström Nicastro are the producers of A Man Called Otto. Magee, Renée Wolfe, and Forster all serve as executive producers.

Following a competitive bidding process earlier this year at the European Film Market, Sony won the rights to the film.
