Storyline

Shatara Michelle Ford offers a unique perspective on the road movie genre in “Dreams in Nightmares.” In order to locate her missing friend, Z (Denée Benton) embarks on a cross-country journey across the Midwest of the United States. Z travels with her two best friends, Kel (Mars Rucker) and Lauren (Dezi Bing), and their journey turns into a voyage of self-awareness and revelation.

The group puts their bonds and beliefs to the test as they travel through several cities and come across a number of obstacles and odd happenings. The film’s larger themes of identity, community, and defiance of social norms are mirrored in each location, which reveals hidden conflicts of both a personal and ideological nature. The film examines the courageous act of making room for oneself and one’s chosen family in a world that is becoming more and more divided through a blend of moving drama and creative storytelling.
