Dorohedoro: A Surreal Blend of Chaos and Magic
Dorohedoro is a very unusual anime that leads viewers on some sort of wild goose chase through a world flooded with magic, violence, mystery, and dark humor. The anime adaptation is based on the manga series by Q Hayashida, and it was published on January 12, 2020. What the anime wears as its mark of attention is its grittily unique art, complex characters, and all the surrealism it consequently creates. On the back drop of cyberpunk, horror, and dark fantasy, Dorohedoro follows a different path from the traditional anime. It is therefore set amidst a post-apocalyptic world wherein magic users terrorize non-magic citizens.
Set amidst bizarre landscapes and creatures, Dorohedoro is found to be built around a central narrative: identity, revenge, and truth-seeking.
Plot Summary
There are two worlds—the "hole" and the world of magic users. In Hole, this planet is a grim and decaying city inhabited by humans living in fear of magic users, who invade the world in order to practice and test their spells on unsuspecting citizens. The world of magic users is, of course, much more sumptuous and ruled by a dictatorship of powerful sorcerers. The magical users treat the hole's inhabitants as lab rats, mutilating and transforming them into grotesque monsters, or killing them with no penalty.
The central hero of the action is Caiman, a person who lost his memories and, due to being tortured by one of the magical practitioners, found his head transformed into a reptile's. His only aim is to find this one, who made him a monster, and defeat him in order to regain human shape. Together with his best friend Nikaido, the two quest through Hole in the search for answers, holding ground and fighting powerful battles with sorcerers. Caiman's special ability is his negation of magic, as he bites off heads of magic users to determine if they are the right ones for the wrongdoing that transformed him. There is a mystical figure in his mouth that continues to communicate ambiguous messages to the victim, suggesting whether he or she is the right person or not.
While Caiman aims to get back his lost memories, Nikaido has a secret of her own: She is an extremely powerful magic user who has chosen to live in Hole and conceals her abilities from Caiman. During the course of the story, this fellow faces all sorts of weird and dangerous beings from both worlds, leading to violent confrontations and surreal adventures.
Main Cast of Characters
The world-building is intriguing, but the depth and complexity of the characters are what make the drama interesting. Each of the central characters gives the story something, or, in other words, his motivations and personalities are closely explored. Take a look below at the core cast:
Caiman

Caiman is the main protagonist of Dorohedoro. Caiman is a lizard-like head that has no memory of when he was transformed and only wishes to locate the witch who did this to him. Behind his rather intimidating mug is sarcasm and a goofy personality. He is immune to magic; therefore, he can be very vicious in hunting down wizards. While chaos and brutality surround him, Caiman remains devoted to his friends, especially Nikaido, who stands by his side as he seeks answers. His mysterious past forms the main outline for the series as the truth about his condition gradually unravels.
Nikaido

Nikaido is Caiman's best friend and a martial arts expert operating a small eatery called the Hungry Bug in Hole. Caiman has a ferociously protective nature toward Nikaido and, consequently, aids her in finding the sorcerer that tormented him. Nikaido, however, is hiding a big secret—she is a magic user with the rare ability of time manipulation. Unlike other magic users, she chose to live in Hole and held back from using her powers so that nobody would ever be able to find her. Her relationship with Caiman is one of the heart cords of the series and continues to evolve, revealing her background and motivation for staying in Hole as the story unfolds.
En
En is one of the strongest and most influential magicians around; he's a big shot leading a corporation of criminals. He also happens to be obsessed with mushrooms and converts everything he contacts with his magic into them. En is something of a mysterious figure; though he is an ice-cold and calculating man, he does show deep loyalty to his family and subordinates. En would become an antagonist both to Caiman and Nikaido as he investigates the mystery surrounding Caiman's transformation for his own reasons. The organization that En leads is a significant part of the series, as it introduces a broad range of characters with individual skills and personalities.
Shin

Shin is one of En's most active enforcers. He is a former human who has turned into a magic user. His power is splitting people apart with such accuracy, but using a hammer, which makes him deadly and very effective at fighting. However, he also has a quite serene and laid-back personality, often cracking jokes and playing with his companion Noi. His background is a feature that reveals a transformation in his life from a troubled youth to one of the most trusted allies of En.
Noi

Noi is Shin's assistant and cousin to En. Her healing power makes her nearly indestructible, and she possesses loads of physical strength. Despite the highly intimidating appearance of Noi, she is warm-hearted and jolly. She really loves her friends and takes great care of them. Noi is very close to Shin, and their relationships make the story lighten up some times for comic effects. Noi proves to be an outstanding character in the series because of her loyalty towards her comrades and her cousin En.
Fujita
Fujita is the most inferior character of En's group and is always an opening for comedy. He is clumsy and lacks experience but is eager to use the opportunities that come along his way to enhance his strength in avenging his friend, who was mercilessly murdered by Caiman. Though he stumbles at every given opportunity, Fujita's persistence has made him quite an identifiable person amidst the sea of overwhelming power and constant danger within.
Ebisu
The other member of En's group is Ebisu, introduced as one of the mysterious characters but with dark undertones. Her magic skill is one of the most deadly skills to the characters in the series, but after a confrontation with Caiman, she suffers from memory loss. Throughout the series, as Ebisu's character continued to advance, she became a morbidly funny and heartbreaking mix of both characteristics, often invoking horror and comedy.
Art and Animation
One of the most striking aspects of the series has to be its visual style. The MAPPA animation brings together 2D and 3D elements to achieve a gritty, dark feel that really does capture the chaos of Hole perfectly. The intricate background work and character design in itself capture the grotesque beauty of Q Hayashida's original manga art. Muted colors only contrast with the graphic acts of violence, making them all the more jarring.

It is able to balance the high-octane gory fight scenes with quieter moments of interaction and world-building of the characters. Despite the grim setting, Dorohedoro often veers into the absurdly comedic, and the animation adapts seamlessly to these tonal shifts, keeping viewers on their toes throughout.
Dorohedoro is one of a kind, defying genre conventions and presenting a world unlike any other. It's no wonder then that the show quickly gained a loyal fan base with its dark, surreal humor, the intense action, and the memorable characters. The mystery around the past of Caiman, together with the richly developed world and its eccentric inhabitants, serves to keep the audience engaged from start to finish. Whether you are an offbeat junkie for bizarre and supernatural powers or just are a fan of the dystopian narrative, Dorohedoro has it all, giving you a wild ride in a world where anything can happen.
