Director Sean Baker Urges Hollywood to Break Free from the Superhero Mold
Festival de Cannes

Sean Baker, regarded as a great filmmaker, is also saying something about the diversity of telling stories by screening his latest movie, "Anora" at Hollywood's Rodeo Drive for its premiere. According to him, movies should not be confined in the box of so-called superhero and action blockbusters.

Baker spoke about his general feeling that audiences are hungry for more diversified cinematic fare and commented on the fact that, while there will always be a niche for superheroes and action blockbusters, there's now an increasing appetite for a far more earthy, character- rather than style-driven approach to these types of stories. The coming-of-age drama "Anora," which played its world premiere at Venice, is an excellent example.

It is evident that Baker's style, in "Anora," stamps his own mark while combining the realism of the time period with social commentary. The movie is about the life story of a young woman, Anora, a refreshing departure from most cinematic Hollywood offerings.

In a statement recent to the world, Baker correctly reminds us how different stories in movies are vital. Whereas Hollywood is known for its eternal innovation and subsequent breakdown, there is now a greater need for films that break the status quo and provide audiences with another perspective. "Anora" has been a testament of the power of independent filmmaking and its importance to tell a story which would resonate on a deeper level with the audiences.
