Despicable Me 4 on Netflix: Another Hilarious Minion-Filled Adventure or Just More of the Same?

Should You Stream or Skip Despicable Me 4?

The Minions are back! Despicable Me 4, the latest installment in the beloved franchise, has finally hit Netflix and VOD services like Amazon Prime Video. With a staggering $750 million box office haul (and counting), the franchise proves yet again that audiences just can't get enough of Gru and his little yellow sidekicks. But does this latest sequel bring anything new to the table, or is it just another Minion-packed comedy relying on chaos and slapstick humor?

The Plot: More Laughs, Less Logic

Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) is living a relatively quiet life with his wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig), their three adopted daughters, baby Gru Jr. (Tara Strong), and, of course, a house full of Minions. But trouble comes knocking when Gru’s old high school rival, Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell), escapes from prison, forcing the Anti-Villain League (AVL) to place Gru and his family in witness protection.

Their new suburban life in the town of Mayflower isn’t exactly smooth sailing. Gru struggles to fit in, Lucy takes on a disastrous new job as a hairdresser, and the Minions—well, they do what they do best: cause absolute mayhem. Meanwhile, Maxime plots his revenge, setting up a high-stakes confrontation with Gru.

The Good: Humor That Hits the Mark

One thing Despicable Me 4 does well is keeping the laughs coming. From slapstick antics to pop culture references, the movie sticks to its tried-and-tested formula of fast-paced, wacky humor. A standout is the Minions' new adventure: some are shipped off to the AVL, where they undergo an experiment that turns them into super-powered "MegaMinions." This subplot feels like a playful jab at superhero movies, adding an extra layer of fun.

Other comedic highlights include:

  • Gru’s disastrous attempt to blend into suburbia
  • A Minion stuck in a vending machine for the entire movie
  • A wild country-club tennis match gone wrong
  • Baby Gru Jr.'s diaper-changing squad, featuring lightning-fast Minions

The Bad: A Plot That Feels All Over the Place

If you’re looking for a deep, well-structured storyline, Despicable Me 4 might not be the movie for you. While the franchise has never been about intricate storytelling, this installment feels particularly disjointed. Several subplots—including Gru being blackmailed into a heist by his snobby teenage neighbor and Lucy’s struggle as a hairdresser—feel underdeveloped and disconnected.

Additionally, while Despicable Me movies usually have a heartfelt core, this one leans more on humor than emotional depth. Unlike Pixar films that balance laughs with meaningful storytelling, Despicable Me 4 prioritizes jokes over character development.

Voice Cast & Performances: A Familiar but Fun Ensemble

Steve Carell once again delivers a fantastic performance as Gru, complete with his signature exaggerated accent. Will Ferrell’s portrayal of Maxime Le Mal adds a new comedic villain to the mix, though he doesn’t quite reach the charm of previous antagonists like Vector or Balthazar Bratt.

Other notable performances include:

  • Kristen Wiig as Lucy, bringing her usual charm
  • Joey King as Poppy, the teenage troublemaker
  • Pierre Coffin voicing the Minions, maintaining their gibberish-filled hilarity

Verdict: Stream It or Skip It?

Stream It If:

✔ You love the Minions and their over-the-top humor. ✔ You’re looking for a lighthearted, family-friendly film with non-stop laughs. ✔ You don’t mind a chaotic, fast-paced plot.

Skip It If:

You’re expecting a well-thought-out storyline with emotional depth. You’ve had enough of Minion madness. You prefer animated films with a more mature, Pixar-style approach.

At this point, the Despicable Me franchise knows exactly what it is: a fun, silly, action-packed comedy aimed at making kids (and some adults) laugh. If you go into Despicable Me 4 expecting anything more than Minion-fueled antics and outrageous humor, you might be disappointed. But if all you want is 90 minutes of pure, goofy entertainment, then grab some popcorn and let the chaos unfold.
