Cristin Milioti Wants a Second Act as DC’s Sofia in The Penguin

Actress Cristin Milioti, best known for charming audiences in How I Met Your Mother, is openly hoping her journey with Sofia Gigante in HBO’s The Penguin isn’t over. In a recent chat on The Awardist podcast, she expressed that her character’s arc “doesn't feel finished” and she’d jump at the chance to play Sofia again.

Emmy Recognition Sparks Reflection

Sofia's emotional depth and complexity earned Milioti a Best Actress nomination in the limited-series/movie category at the 77th Emmys. The Penguin itself collected an impressive total of 24 nominations this year—second only to Severance’s staggering 27. Milioti shared that being recognized alongside her cast and crew has been “really overwhelming”.

The Physical and Emotional Toll—and Joy

Playing Sofia pushed Milioti to explore difficult terrain: a character scarred by trauma and grappling with violence. She described the process as both taxing and deeply joyful, since the role challenged her in ways she'd actively sought. She praised writer Lauren LeFranc for crafting such a complex character and said the experience was “a pleasure” despite its emotional weight.

Reunion Energy at Award Season

Milioti values award events not only for recognition but also for reconnection. She shared that The Penguin cast hadn’t spent much time together, and the awards circuit has been a welcome moment to reunite and celebrate their collective efforts.

So—Will There Be More?

While Milioti is eager to return, nothing is confirmed. She admits that any continuation would be a decision for the higher-ups—but her hope remains strong.
