Shares of Conagra Brands faced downward pressure despite the company beating quarterly earnings estimates for its fourth fiscal quarter ended May 26. Conagra, a prominent player in the packaged foods industry with popular brands like Slim Jim and Reddi Whip, reported adjusted earnings per share of 61 cents. This figure exceeded Wall Street’s expectations of 57 cents per FactSet. However, net sales for the quarter totaled $2.91 billion, slightly missing the consensus estimate of $2.93 billion.

CEO Sean Connolly acknowledged the challenges the company encountered throughout fiscal year 2024 but expressed optimism about the future. In his statement accompanying the earnings release, Connolly noted, “Looking ahead, we expect a gradual waning of the challenging industry trends seen throughout fiscal year 2024, as consumers adapt and establish new reference prices.”

Despite the earnings beat, Conagra issued cautious guidance for fiscal 2025. The company anticipates organic net sales to either decline by up to 1.5% or remain flat compared to fiscal 2024. Additionally, Conagra projected adjusted earnings per share in the range of $2.60 to $2.65 for fiscal 2025, which fell short of analysts’ expectations of $2.70 per share.

In response to the guidance, Conagra’s stock price dropped by 3.7% to $27.75 in Thursday morning trading. This decline marked its largest decrease since July 14, 2022, when a mixed quarterly report caused shares to tumble by 7.3%, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Concurrently, the broader market, as measured by the S&P 500, also experienced a minor decline of 0.3% during Thursday morning trading.

Investors and analysts are closely watching Conagra’s strategic moves amid evolving consumer preferences and industry dynamics. The company’s efforts to navigate through competitive pressures and changing consumer behaviors will be critical as it seeks to stabilize and grow its market position in the coming quarters.
