Trump Nominates Climate Skeptic Chris Wright as Energy Secretary
In a move that has sparked significant debate, President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Chris Wright, the CEO of Liberty Energy and a prominent advocate for fossil fuel production, to serve as the Secretary of Energy in his upcoming administration. Wright, known for his strong stance as a climate change skeptic, has long argued that fossil fuel production is crucial for economic prosperity and US energy dominance, aligning with Trump’s vision to reduce environmental regulations and strengthen the domestic energy sector.
Trump praised Wright as a leader who will "drive innovation" and help usher in a "Golden Age of American Prosperity and Global Peace." Wright, in turn, expressed his enthusiasm for the role, calling energy the "lifeblood" of society and promising to get to work immediately.
Wright's nomination is seen as part of Trump's broader agenda to prioritize fossil fuels, dismissing the global need for a transition to renewable energy sources. Wright has notably rejected the concept of a "climate crisis" and referred to the term "carbon pollution" as misleading, arguing that all forms of energy have both positive and negative impacts. His views contrast sharply with the goals of environmental advocates and, in particular, with Elon Musk, a key backer of Trump’s who has heavily invested in electric vehicles and solar energy.
While some in the fossil fuel industry, including Harold Hamm, a longtime Trump ally, have praised Wright for his expertise, environmental advocates are critical of the nomination. Jackie Wong from the Natural Resources Defense Council called Wright a "champion of dirty fossil fuels" and decried the selection as a “disastrous mistake.” Critics also worry that Wright’s appointment could undermine the Department of Energy’s other essential roles, such as overseeing nuclear security and scientific research at national laboratories.
This nomination fits within a broader trend in Trump’s Cabinet selections, which has included controversial figures like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for Health Secretary and Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence, adding to the divisiveness of his administration's key appointments.
