Carry On: The High-Stakes Thriller Taking Flight this Holiday Season
In "Carry On" a TSA agent faces the ultimate moral dilemma when a mysterious traveler coerces him into letting a suspicious package onto a Christmas Day flight, igniting a suspense-filled thriller."
The thriller "Carry On" from director Jaume Collet-Serra and due to open on December 13, 2024, brings hair-raising tension to the holiday season. Starring Taron Egerton as TSA agent Ethan Kopek, the movie takes tension and protocol-ridden airport security to a whole new level. However, when a stranger played by Jason Bateman blackmails him into allowing a suspicious package onto a Christmas Day flight, Ethan faces far more than a routine day at work.
Ethan's usual routine transforms into a battlefield both morally and psychologically as he is compelled to make the choice between his career and unsafe compromise. As the minutes tick down to the eventual departure of the plane, a relentless traveler rises to the position of forcing him to turn a blind eye and allow a parcel, which holds high stakes, to pass through security.
Taron Egerton, famous for "Kingsman" and the captivating performance in "Rocketman", brings an emotional depth to Ethan Kopek, whose character starts out on screen as a rigorous TSA agent but who is compelled to make decisions that test his beliefs. Egerton's acting reveals Ethan's vulnerability and fear as he is a man torn between his duties and the danger that the package pose to hundreds of passengers. But the most ominous figure is the blackmailer, played in shadow by Jason Bateman. This is the Traveler-a powerfully evil entity who uses the chaos of Christmas to get away with the ultimate crime.
Sofia Carson plays Nora Parisi, another valuable ally for Ethan. Together, they navigate a world of security checkpoints, suspicious packages, and high-stakes confrontations. Carson's character adds a layer of tension, as Nora struggles to aid Ethan while avoiding being badly hurt herself. Danielle Deadwyler and Dean Norris also add depth to the cast, adding layers of urgency and suspicion as they play members of airport personnel who begin to suspect that something is wrong.
Screenplay by T.J. Fixman and Michael Green, plays on the small setting of the airport at the height of the holiday season. By confining much of the action to a highly secure environment, "Carry On" creates an atmosphere of claustrophobic tension in which each step of the journey becomes increasingly nerve-wracking as classic thriller elements—secrets, blackmail, and life-or-death stakes—come together under modern twists. Collet-Serra, who directed "The Shallows" and "Jungle Cruise", employs tight shots and high-energy pacing to keep the audience guessing about the Traveler's motivations and the nature of the suspicious package.
Additional suspense is built through the holiday season where decorations fill the picture and travelers throng the airport, which contrast with the dark tension brewing in the background. The tagline, "Every holiday season, millions travel safely by air. This Christmas will be different," emphasizes the unsettling feeling that builds throughout the film.
As Carry On readsies for its eventual release, it promises the audience an immersive thriller that not just entertains but also takes courage under pressure and ethics into account. It is a thriller with a great cast and storyline, and since it's coming in December, it will undoubtedly be one of the must-watch thrillers of the season.
