Carlos Alcaraz Expresses Frustration Over Time Violations at China Open
Carlos Alcaraz’s opening match at the 2024 China Open was marked by tension, not just between him and his opponent but with the chair umpire as well. During his first-round victory against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, the world No. 2 was hit with two time violations, sparking a heated exchange with the chair umpire, Raluca Alexandra Andrei.
The time violation rule allows players 25 seconds between points, and while Alcaraz is typically known for his quick pace, he was penalized twice in the first set. The second violation, which came at a crucial moment during his serve, resulted in a point penalty, leaving the 21-year-old visibly frustrated. Alcaraz tossed the ball away in anger and confronted the umpire in Spanish, saying, “It’s impossible to play tennis like this.”

Despite the tension, Alcaraz composed himself and went on to win the match 6-4, 6-4. However, this wasn’t the first time the young Spaniard had aired grievances about the time violation rules. Earlier this year, after a loss at the Queen’s Club Championships, he raised concerns about the new timing regulations, which he described as unfair for players.
Following the match in Beijing, Alcaraz reiterated his issues with the enforcement of the time rule, noting that it’s difficult to stick to routines when the clock starts immediately after a point. “I felt like I was in a rush all the time,” Alcaraz said. “I had no time to bounce and do my routine.”
In addition to time violations, Alcaraz has recently voiced concerns over the grueling ATP schedule, which includes major events like the 2024 Paris Olympics and the Laver Cup. The physically demanding year has led many players, including Alcaraz, to question the toll it’s taking on their health. “Probably they are going to kill us in some way,” he said, expressing concern over the frequency of injuries among top players.
Despite the challenges, Alcaraz remains focused on maintaining his positive mindset. “I play my best tennis when I smile and enjoy it on court,” he said, hinting that staying motivated will be key as he navigates the rest of the season.
Alcaraz will face Tallon Griekspoor in the second round of the China Open, with fans eager to see if he can continue his winning form.
