Cannes 2025: Launching a $20M Vision for Decentralized Media
A game-changing announcement shook the world entertainment industry at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Led by Luxembourg-based Digital Genesis Fund, established by media pioneer Hendrik Hey, in collaboration with the UK’s Goldfinch Holdings, the two companies have announced a $20M co-investment fund. However, this wasn’t just about funding new creative projects; it was the start of a larger mission: to expand the global footprint of Web3 and metaverse-powered storytelling, using technology to break down the walls of traditional media.
Together, they are creating something more enduring than a financial deal. They’re laying the groundwork for a decentralized, inclusive, and tech-driven entertainment world in which creators, along with their fans, get to take ownership of the story themselves.
From Partnership to Platform: A Strategy for Global Action
The partnership between Digital Genesis and Goldfinch is not a one-time collaboration. It’s a longer-term strategy of reimagining how content is produced, financed, and distributed. It has at its heart a commitment to decentralization, taking advantage of blockchain, artificial intelligence, and tokenization to create new opportunities for people to invest in, engage with, and profit from the media they consume.
One of the first projects in this new ecosystem is Lumiere, a tokenized crowdfunding platform backed by Animoca Brands and Rolling Stone. Lumiere lets fans, not just studios or financiers, invest in media at the earliest stages. This changes the dynamics of content creation by giving everyday supporters a real stake in the process.
Another major project is The Squad, a Web3-native production studio that is trying to facilitate creative collaboration. The Squad leverages blockchain and smart contracts for IP rights and revenue distribution. This allows creators to keep greater control over their work and collaborators to know clearly how they will be rewarded.
At the center of it all is MILC (Media Industry Licensing Content), founded by Hendrik Hey. MILC isn’t just a platform; it’s a digital environment, a fully immersive, 3D-ready metaverse where media is experienced rather than simply viewed. The MILC metaverse integrates business tools like ad sales, distribution, and rights management with community-driven features that allow real-time feedback, ownership, and engagement.
According to a recent study, the global blockchain technology market was valued at $26.91 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow to approximately $1.88 trillion by 2034, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 52.9%. This trend reinforces the need for real-world applications, such as Lumiere, The Squad, and MILC, which provide these technologies to creative industries in a way that is accessible and impactful.
Cannes as Launchpad: Building a Borderless Creative Economy
The announcement at TechCannes was no coincidence; it was the kickoff event for a broader, borderless roadmap. Next on the calendar is the Indonesia Creative Investment Forum, scheduled for later this year. Co-hosted by Goldfinch Indonesia and supported by local investors Synco and Goshen Prime, the forum is also backed by the Indonesian Creative Ministry. Over two days, the forum will bring together public institutions, global investors, and creators to explore how decentralized media can be a catalyst for regional growth.
Southeast Asia, with its rapidly growing digital economy and creative talent base, is a key focus for the fund’s global rollout. By working with local partners and empowering regional creators, the partnership hopes to build lasting infrastructures for innovation.
Hendrik Hey, who is already talking with partners across new markets, sees it as a blueprint for the next era of entertainment. In his words, delivered during the Cannes presentation, he summed it up powerfully: “We are no longer just creating content; we are building worlds. And in these worlds, everyone becomes part of the story.” This isn’t marketing language; it’s the architecture of a new media era.
Building the Foundation: Web3 Education and Access
While the fund and its projects are big in scale, the teams behind them know that true adoption starts with education. For most traditional companies, terms like NFTs, smart contracts, and tokenization still feel far away. That’s why MILC has launched a series of free Web3 consulting webinars for companies across Europe that want to enter the space but don’t know where to start.
These sessions go beyond theory. They give step-by-step guidance on everything from assessing a company’s Web3 readiness to implementing new workflows that integrate blockchain into daily business.
Previous sessions have been held in collaboration with the Chambers of Industry and Commerce in Hesse and Koblenz. The next one, with the East Württemberg Chamber of Industry and Commerce, takes place on June 4th, 2025. By providing a path to clarity and strategic thinking about Web3 adoption, MILC is enabling industries across the board, from media to manufacturing, to understand how decentralized technologies bring tangible value to the real world. The result is a growing community of companies that are not just testing but building in Web3.
The Digital Genesis and Goldfinch collaboration is a statement: the future of media won’t be controlled by a few big players. It will be shaped by a network of investors, creators, audiences, and technologists working across borders, disciplines, and platforms.
