Treasury Department Introduces Free, Permanent Tax Filing Option Following Successful Pilot Program

The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently made a significant announcement that Direct File, a no-cost tax filing option, will become a permanent feature starting in 2025. This decision follows the successful completion of a pilot program where 140,000 taxpayers utilized Direct File to claim over $90 million in refunds, while collectively saving around $5.6 million in filing costs.

Direct File’s establishment is attributed to resources made available through the Inflation Reduction Act, reflecting President Biden’s commitment to saving Americans time and money while ensuring families receive the tax benefits they deserve. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen underscored the importance of providing a free tool to all Americans who seek to file directly with the IRS, aligning with the administration’s overarching goals.

The success of Direct File was further bolstered by an additional $80 billion in funding allocated through the Inflation Reduction Act. Notable achievements included a substantial reduction in call wait times from 30 minutes to just three minutes and a notable increase in walk-in visits to IRS assistance centers by 170,000.
