In a surprising turn of events, U.S. Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, is distancing himself from the progressive label that once defined him. Fetterman, who gained fame for championing issues such as single-payer health care, recreational marijuana, LGBTQ rights, and endorsing progressive figures like Bernie Sanders, recently made statements that have raised eyebrows among his supporters.

Speaking to NBC News on Friday, Fetterman declared, “I’m not a progressive. I just think I’m a Democrat that is very committed to choice and other things.” This revelation comes amid criticism from some of his progressive supporters who have been disappointed by Fetterman’s recent policy stances.

One of the contentious issues is Fetterman’s robust support for Israel, particularly in the aftermath of the October 7th Hamas attacks. Despite facing backlash from progressive circles, Fetterman remains firm in his position, stating, “With Israel, I’m going to be on the right side of that.”

Another point of contention is Fetterman’s shift on immigration. While he once espoused a pro-immigrant stance, recent comments suggest a more nuanced approach. Fetterman expressed the need to address the surge in migrants at the southern border, emphasizing the challenge of managing a record-high of 270,000 encounters in September alone. “It’s a reasonable conversation,” Fetterman asserted, “until somebody can say there’s an explanation on what we can do.”

Fetterman’s warming up to migration restrictions and his calls for effective border management have raised concerns among progressives who traditionally advocate for more lenient immigration policies. The senator, however, contends that negotiating with Republicans is essential to ensure aid is sent to Ukraine and Israel, addressing their respective wars.

Criticism has also been directed at Fetterman’s continuous scolding of fellow Democrat Senator Bob Menendez, who faces federal charges of bribery and acting as a foreign agent. Fetterman’s calls for Menendez’s departure have caused friction within Democratic circles.

Despite the apparent shift in Fetterman’s positions, some Republicans view it as a pleasant surprise, with GOP strategist Christopher Nicholas noting that the senator may be gaining clout with the opposing party.

While Fetterman’s recent stances might be losing him support among progressives, many elected Democrats are standing by him. Senator Bob Casey expressed confidence in Fetterman, stating, “John’s doing everything he can to serve the state. And I think he’s doing well.”

As Fetterman continues to navigate this unorthodox political landscape, the future holds uncertainties about how these shifts will impact his standing within the Democratic Party and broader political circles.
